A new friend of Mr. Furu Fox Amigurumi and Jr. Rakku Raccoon Amigurumi has moved into the woodland today. Ms. DuDu, the Deer Amigurumi, has been looking forward to learning about her new life in this new habitat.

Ms. DuDu is a cute young deer who has a mixed feeling between anxious and curious in her new surrounding. Due to nature and her species where she belongs to the group of the vulnerable animal in the wild, predators hunt them for meat, human hunt them for game and meat.  She does not want to be hunted down so she decided to leave her family and move into the woodland seeking for Mr. Furu’s assistance, with the intention to learn as many new survival skills as she possibly can. We wish her all the best!

This deer amigurumi, DuDu, measures about 10 inches tall. It is crochet by using a 3.5mm crochet hook in the colorwork of Brown, Beige, White and Black Acrylic yarns. Just like her friends Mr. Furu and Jr. Rakku, the pattern of deer amigurumi calls for “Split Single Crochet Stitch”, some may know it as “Crochet Knit Stitch” or “Waistcoat Stitch” where the hook is inserted in between the legs of the next stitch. By way of using Split Single Crochet Stitch in this pattern, it will keep the colorwork vertically straight throughout the round. (Warnings: Please do not attempt to crochet it with normal single crochet (US terms), it won’t work in the correct proportion in size, shape, and colorwork.)

DuDu deer amigurumi is born rare and special, besides the front beige patch on her body, she has the distinctive “V” dot markings at her back instead of the polka-dot markings from her species. She is definitely a unique one. Whenever she is happy and excited, she will wag her cheery little tail and dance like nobody’s watching.

DuDu deer amigurumi is still new in the woodland, hence, it might take a little while before she overcomes her nervous. She does look a little worried but it will soon past. She will be a happy cheery little deer in the woodland again!

Important Note: This is a colorwork amigurumi using Split Single Crochet / Knit Stitch / Waistcoat Stitch method. Please DO NOT attempt to convert it to normal Single Crochet.

Why use Split Sing Crochet instead of normal Single Crochet?
Please take note that this amigurumi pattern is using Split Single Crochet (SSC), some may know it as Crochet Knit Stitch or Waistcoat Stitch. Unlike the normal Single Crochet, SSC inserts hook in between the legs of the next st. In colorwork amigurumi where stitches are crochet in the continuous round, SSC keeps the colorwork vertically straight throughout the round. It is because the hook is inserted in between the legs of next stitch, but if you are using normal Single Crochet, the colorwork will lean to the right or left depending on if you are right-handed or left-handed.

How to change yarn color in colorwork crochet?
Follow the pattern to work on stitches in color A until the last yarn over, pull through the loop with the new color B. Leave the color A behind until it is time to work on it again. Continue to work in Color B until it is time to change the color back to A, on the last stitch in the color B, just pull through the color A on the last yarn over and drop the color B. Leave a decent length of the unwork yarn between the color change so that it won’t distort the shape of your amigurumi. Repeat this until you have completed the pattern.
Note: I don’t hide the unworked yarn between the stitches because it will cause distortion in stitch height, especially in SSC stitch.

Deer Amigurumi: Assembly

Pic 1
This is how the inside of the colorwork amigurumi looks. You may leave the unworked yarn stranded as it is. If you have left a decent length of yarn between the colorwork, then you are fine to leave them as it is. If the yarns are too short, you may trim the yarn and knot them together as shown in Pic 2.

Pic 2
Personally, I prefer to neaten my lengthy unworked yarn instead of stranded across the colorwork section. The clean interior makes it easier for stuffing and shaping.

Align the muzzle of the deer amigurumi with the marking between the eyes as shown in the picture. Pin, sew and stuff the muzzle to the head.

Next, position and pin the ears to the head. Make sure bother ears are aligned and in symmetry.

Position all parts together. First, sew the head to the body, followed by the arms, legs, and tail respectively.
